On a more serious level I've always surmised they started with a rough alphabetical list, and then threw in some random names, and then started again at A and worked on from there, which is why Duchovny is only 000141. “why would Gillian Anderson be there, and not David Duchovny?”

I surmise that the people who wrote the very first draft of the IMDB were men! And in the 1990s Gillian Anderson loomed large in their dreams.

On a more serious level I’ve always surmised they started with a rough alphabetical list, and then threw in some random names, and then started again at A and worked on from there, which is why Duchovny is only 000141.
